Roy Cooper, the previous governor of North Carolina, has claimed the state's Senate election. He defeated Republican Michael Whatley, switching the seat to Democrats. This represents Cooper's re-entry to the Senate after a decade, establishing him as the first Democratic senator from North Carolina in over a decade. The election results were confirmed by the Associated Press. Cooper's victory is important for the Democratic Party, as it helps to balance recent losses in the state.
